Everything is negotiable
The recent Taylor Swift Eras tour in Southeast Asia was hosted in only one country: Singapore. The Singaporean government negotiated a deal to make Singapore the only stop in the region by subsidizing the cost of the event, much to the chagrin of its neighbours.
This was a pretty strategic move. Swifty events are known to increase local GDPs, so a mutually beneficial deal was negotiated. This tour upgraded Singapore’s GDP forecast for the year. The economic effects were also felt in Australia, Japan, and elsewhere.
This is a great example of asymmetric dealmaking, where one party is prescient and capitalizes on an opportunity for a mutually beneficial outcome.
It shows that the world can mold around your aspirations if you are strategic enough or want something bad enough (or have the capital!). It’s fluid, and everything is negotiable.
Ps. We look forward to contributing to the GNP of Vancouver later this year.
